Friday Five – Friday the 13th, 2004

Happy Friday the 13th. Now the Friday Five:
1. Are you superstitious?
Not really. I do have weird quirks occasionally especially when playing games (such as if I win a hand in euchre because I cut the deck before I dealt I might continue to cut the deck before dealing) but in general I am not.
2. What extremes have you heard of someone going to in the name of superstition?
I’m sure there are a lot of people who are very superstitious. I don’t know of any though. Probably the most superstitious person I know is Firda but even she isn’t that superstitious. The most extreme thing I have ever heard someone do in the name of superstition would be performing an exorcism on someone because they believe that person is possessed. I believe this is directly related to superstitious beliefs the person holds. Though this is all from news stories I’ve heard.
3. Believer or not, what’s your favorite superstition?
Bad luck from a black cat crossing your path. Since I love cats I always try to make friends with them no matter what the colour. I think it should be good luck if you make friends with a black cat. I also like the bad luck if you open your umbrella indoors rule. Sometimes I do that just for the hell of it 🙂
4. Do you believe in luck? If yes, do you have a lucky number/article of clothing/ritual?
Sure. Luck is basically a fancy way of saying probability. Some people have better probability than others. Though I think in the end it is all up to the person involved and not up to fate. And I don’t have a lucky number or clothing or ritual.
5. Do you believe in astrology? Why or why not?
Not really because I’m a scientist and I need proof. Astrology doesn’t give me proof. It’s interesting and all but not something to run your life by.

  1. I agree about the cats. My mother in law has three black cats who like to hang out together, and follow each other around. I think I would be in big trouble if I allowed the black cat bad luck thing to apply to me.
