Friday Five – January 16th, 2003

A Friday Five for the new year:
1. What does it say in the signature line of your emails?
I don’t have a signature line. I figure if I can’t take the time to type “Troy” at the bottom of an email I probably shouldn’t be sending the email.
2. Did you have a senior quote in your high school yearbook? What was it? If you haven’t graduated yet, what would you like your quote to be?
I don’t think I had a quote in my high school year book. We were allowed to put in a message, something along the lines of “J.B. and C.Q. I really had a great time – you know what I mean *wink wink*”. Those type of messages (that one is not from my high school message). For my university yearbook my quote was “Smile on mighty Jesus, Spinal Meningitis got me down”. The quote comes from a song by the band Ween called “Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down)“. The reason why I picked it is because during my undergraduate career Waterloo had a meningitis scare and we were all given free meningitis shots. I don’t think it was spinal meningitis but it was some type. I thought it was an interesting quote.
3. If you had vanity plates on your car, what would they read? If you already have them, what do they say?
Hmmm. Maybe “FPIRATE”. Probably not though. I’d probably just end up trying to beat the system and get a dirty word on my plates. Then again I always thought vanity plates were kind of lame. Especially if you were a get-away driver. 🙂
4. Have you received any gifts with messages engraved upon them? What did the inscription say?
I got a watch from my parents for my high school graduation. I think it just said something like 1995 – High School Graduation or something like that. I haven’t worn it in years. That is how it usually works with me. I get a watch. I wear it for a couple of weeks and then I don’t wear it again. I don’t like watches. I like being in a state of limbo. I don’t have to know what time it is at all moments in the day. I like being surprised.
5. What would you like your epitaph to be?
“The time has come,” the Walrus said,
“To talk of many things:
Of shoes—and ships—and sealing-wax—
Of cabbages—and kings—
And why the sea is boiling hot—
And whether pigs have wings.”
I think it would be appropriate because this part of the poem (called the Walrus and the Carpenter from Alice Through the Looking Glass) is nonsensical and to us death is nonsensical as well. It’s as foreign to us as pigs with wings. I could probably come up with something better with more time to think but I’ve always like this poem.

  1. i love that nonsensical alice in wonderland poem – somehow it actually makes quite a lot of sense, especially when the world seems to have been turned upside down. :o)

  2. i hate watches too. I hate being reminded of the time, and how late i’m getting. Besides it’s a good excuse if you are late. 🙂

  3. “I figure if I can’t take the time to type “Troy” at the bottom of an email I probably shouldn’t be sending the email.”
    I love that.
