Lady in the Water

Firda and I just got back from seeing M. Night Shyamalan’s latest Lady in the Water. The movie was beautiful. The whole story reminded me of a fairytale, albeit an adult one.
The movie is set in a co-operative apartment complex. As the story proceeds you meet the characters that live in the apartment building. Paul Giamatti plays the apartment superintendent who is a loveable loser type character that he has played in previous movies like Sideways and American Splendor. Bryce Dallas Howard plays the innocent female lead, very similar to her role in The Village. Thankfully the characters do not feel “old” or “overplayed”. I won’t give anything more away (since discovering all of the other character types in the movie is part of the experience), but the movie is highly character driven.
The story reminds me of “The Thief of Always” by Clive Barker. Not because of its content, but the feeling of the story. The adult fairytale feeling.
Throughout the movie there were many times I found myself smiling at the story, maybe even tearing up a little – plus add in the occasional “make you jump” moments.
This is the type of movie you’d tell your children, though you might think twice before letting them see the movie (due to the frightening scenes). Go out and see this movie now.
I hate when my entries peter out at the end.
