I just got back from a friends place where we watched Delicatessen. The director of the movie Jean-Pierre Jeunet who also directed Amelie and Alien:Resurrection (also known as Alien 4).
The movie was fantastic. Much like Amelie but in a black comedy sort of way. The main plot of the story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where food is scarce since very little can grow. Louison is an ex-circus performer who ends up taking a job working as a apartment building handyman for a “butcher”. Since food is scarce some people have turned to canibalism. It turns out that the “butcher” actually hires handymen and ends up killing them to feed to his apartment tenants but during Louisons stay the “butcher”s daughter falls in love with him and the rest of the story is her attempts to save Louison from her fathers cutting board.
The style of the film is similar to Amelie but the story is much darker. I would actually classify it as a “dark comedy romance”. Some of it reminded me of the movie Brazil but it made more sense than Brazil. Highly enjoyable. Well worth a rental.
