New Computer

Firda and I made an executive decision today. We went out and got a relatively cheap computer from Future Shop. It’s the first new computer I’ve gotten since around 2000 or so. The last computer was a 933 Mhz Pentium 3. The P3 started randomly crashing last week, after the heatwave. I attempted to do some troubleshooting (i.e. removing cards to see if it ran smoother etc), ran a memory test, but couldn’t figure out what the issue was. I’m thinking it is likely something thermal (i.e. the power supply or something attempting to draw more power than can be supplied) but I’m not sure. I didn’t feel like putting more time and money into a machine that is around 6 years old.
Sadly we went with Future Shop since we needed something quickly and cheap. I wanted to go with Simcoe Computes (from back in my hometown – well close to my hometown) since I’ve had great service from them, but the computer I desire would be out of our current price range (about two times the one we bought – though the two machines can’t be compared). I’m hoping for smooth sailing with the Future Shop purchase since I don’t want to deal with them if anything screws up. When I have more money I plan on getting a desktop for myself (basically for gaming purposes) and will buy it from Simcoe Computes. Until then we did the best we could with the money we had.
P.S. Lucky7 and SMooSH. Please don’t hate us ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. I didn’t know that Future Shop sold Macs! Congratulations! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Heh heh. Sadly we didn’t get a mac. I’m a PC guy. Though Future Shop does sell Macs and I they always look super sleek. I can understand how people love them. I’ve never really had the time/chance to us a newer one.

  3. Oh, I don’t hate you.
They do have some ridiculously cheap deals.
But man…Don’t expect ME to support it. hehe…Just kidding.
I’ll still help if I can.
So uhh.what are the numbers yo?
Anything you bought today should kick the crap out of your old one…even if it is the el cheapo model ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. SMooSH: Thanks bud. Here are the details on the machine we bought.
2.2 GHz AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU (not dual core though), 1GB DDR SDRAM (expandable to 4 GB), 200 GB hard drive, 16x DVD burner, 9-in-1 card reader (on the front, good for Firda’s SD and xD digital memory cards), an onboard 256MB Shared GeForce 6150 Graphics(though I realize it is probably on the low end for video card – I know it kicks the crap out of my old one).
It’s rather nice, though it likely would suck on the high end performance side. We are just getting it back to the state that the old computer was in (minus the freezing and the slowness).

  5. FutureShop and AMD?!?!?
    ***faint***
    Nice numbers.

  6. Lucky7: I know I know. I would have prefered an Intel dual core but the lowest price on a 1 Gb system was a hundred bucks more. The nice thing I also found out is the day after I bought the system the price went down by 65 bucks. I called up future shop and they said bring in the receipt and a printout of the sale price from the web and they can refund your price. Pretty sweet ๐Ÿ™‚
When I buy my mega-computer system I’ll be dealing with Simcoe Computes. Don’t worry ๐Ÿ™‚
