Commercials That Annoy Me

I’m not easily annoyed but when I am I like to rant about it. On TV they are currently showing a McDonalds commercial where a young man sets up to play his cello in what looks to be an airport. He sets out a tip tray for people to leave money in. He runs his bow across the cello and gets ready to play when someone drops a toonie (the two dollar Canadian coin) onto his tray. He then proceeds to put his cello back into its case and gets up to walk away. I am not annoyed by that part of the commercial. What I am annoyed with is the next screen which advertises that you can go to McDonalds and buy a Big Mac and small fries for 2 dollars. If you look close enough you notice that in small print it says “+ Tax”. Now in Canada our taxes are split up into two seperate taxes. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the Provincal Sales Tax (PST). The GST is 7% and the PST for Ontario is 8%. Now all food sales are subjected to the PST so to get your 2 dollar Big Mac and Fries you would actually have to pay $2.16.
That is what annoys me about the commercial. Sure he has 2 dollars. What about that 16 cents? Isn’t he going to look like a fool when he tries to pay for his food? Arghhh!
This issue probably didn’t deserve a post 🙂

  1. Wow, the tax is pretty high in Canada. In Singapore, it’s only 3% GST and people grumbled a lot when it was implemented several years ago.

  2. Nit: I think Canada is actually one of the most taxed countries in the world but I can’t complain. I realize that because we pay high taxes we can keep health care free.
    Daniel: It’s always possible 🙂
