The Royal Tenenbaums

I went out with a friend tonight to see “The Royal Tenenbaums“. The movie is directed by Wes Anderson who also directed “Bottle Rocket” and “Rushmore“. The movie is about a dysfunctional family of child prodigies who end up moving back in with their mother 17 years after they left home. Gene Hackman plays “Royal Tenenbaum” the father who ends up leaving his wife and kids so the the children are raised by their mother, who is played by Anjelica Huston. The story is told using a lot of the same techniques and cinematography Wes used in Rushmore. The movie was beautiful but as my friend said “the humour was a little dark”. The humour might be a little quirky and dark for some people but it was a fun story. Highly recommended to all. Rushmore is another excellent excellent movie that I would recommend to all. The movie is up for Best Writing (Original Screenplay) at the Oscars tonight.
Also of note is that Amelie (my favorite movie of the year) is up for 5 awards, including Writing (Original Screenplay), Foreign Language Film and Cinematography. Ideally I think that this movie should be a shoe in for Best Cinematography.
