Democracy

I’ve been looking through Google news and I’ve come to a conclusion. There are some countries in the world which can’t handle democracy. They don’t understand what democracy is all about which leads to cultural clashes and way too much violence. Maybe I’m over-reacting. Maybe people need to get us to living in a democracy. Maybe once they figure it out the violence will decrease. Or maybe dictatorships were the only way that these countries could be held together and violence minimized (at least violence between the masses). I’m not sure though. I’ve never lived under anything but a democracy – though Canada seems to work pretty well as a democracy. We all get along pretty well and when we don’t we usually don’t go out and attempt to slaughter half of the population.
But those are just my thoughts. What are yours?

  1. For one country in particular, perhaps the problem is that they can’t handle a western-style democracy if it’s forced upon them. I am certainly not an apologist for dictators or barbarian insurgent leaders or terrorists. But in trying to look at things objectively, perhaps the road to democracy in those countries should be undertaken step-by-step. To be successful, revolution must build from within and have some popular support.

If you got yourself a group of leaders who knew what they were doing and were smart enough to listen to the people and try to do what is right then perhaps a Dictatorship would work better than Democracy. Problem is no such leaders exist. And if they do they are smart enough to stay out of politics.

  3. If they were listening to the people, wouldn’t that constitute at least a quasi-democracy?
To me, it feels more like we have replaced one dictatorship with another.
At any rate, even if this is going the way of a democracy, It’s definitely an adjustment. I’m not sure that our forces are going about it the right way. I think that if the interests of this war actually lied in the welfare of the people, our leaders, now their leaders, would have chosen people from within their own population to do the bidding of a proper democracy. In taking action the way that they have, they are proving that they don’t trust anyone from said population to lead. Occupation in the interest of oil profits, not democracy.
Well… you wanted my opinion, right? =-)

  4. Good points. Though this particular rant wasn’t based on what is happening in Iraq. It was brought on by reading about Muslim vs. Christian violence in a African country that has only being a democracy for close to 10 years.
Bloodshed for such stupid reasons. That is what pisses me off.

  5. In agreement…
