SARS

Something that scares me more than this war and more than terrorism is the mysterious illness known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). It started as an epidemic on the other side of the world but at this moment there are 15 suspected cases in Ontario alone. Yesterday a hospital emergency room in Toronto was shut down. It looks like this is one of those super-bugs that everyone has been predicting for the past decade or so. This is what we get for being so clean. Using antiseptics and alcohols to sterilize everything. Taking unnecessary medicines and antibodies when we have minor colds and flus. I’ve always said that when I have kids I’m going to make them eat dirt so that there immune system is not deficient. This whole thing reminds me of the Stephen King’s “The Stand“.

I read about SARS in some child-care magazine when I was in my nephew’s pediatrician’s waiting room yesterday. The disease has probably got here as well.
I guess it could be a good thing that I suck at taking medicines. I’m not too sure, though.

The disease has hit Singapore pretty badly. I think we now have about 69 cases and hundreds on quarantine.

  3. I’ve always been wary of the idea of antibiotics and over cleansing. Pain killers however, I can live with. 🙂

  4. The more I hear about this, the more I get on edge when anyone coughs anywhere near me….

Apparently, no case of SARS has been reported in Indonesia. The Ministry of Health, however, has strongly advised Indonesian citizens not to go to Singapore unless it’s a matter of life and death.

Do you seriously trust the Indonesian authorities on this one?!

Why not? There’s no record that they ever lied when it comes to health matters.
